Top SAGDB players receive huge boost

Last week 40 promising young golfers from the SA Golf Development Board's national coaching programme received a major boost from an initiative put together between the board, the High Performance Centre (hpc) at the University of Pretoria and The Pro Shop.

The golfers, drawn from five provinces, met for three days of intensive evaluation and coaching at the hpc and the Vodacom World of Golf, where they were all also assessed for new clubs. The clubs will be provided by The Pro Shop at a significant discount and purchased by the development programme with a grant from the National Lottery.

As part of the evaluation, all the players went through video analysis and specialised coaching from the World of Golf's professional coaching team. On the final day they played nine holes with their coaches to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice.

The visit to Gauteng was designed to provide the top players in the development programme with added incentives to continue improving and provide them with the extra skills and equipment they need to achieve this.

This was the first gathering of this kind for the SAGDB, and the board aims to hold an annual gathering of its best players for special evaluations and coaching. The development programme will also be using these occasions to identify a squad of players to compete in a yearly match against a team from the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation.
