For a long time SAGDB learners around the country have looked to Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen for inspiration, but now they are telling South Africa's Major winners to move over. They have a new idol and he is one of their own.

EP u/23 team has SAGDB flavour

Proving the strength of the SAGDB programme in Eastern Province, the province's u/23 team has a strong SAGDB influence this year. Three of the players chosen in to compete for EP at the 2012 u/23 Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) in Nelspruit have SAGDB connections.

Pay back from Byron at Riverside

Three years ago 16 year old Worcester student Byron Williams lost his father, who had been a key figure in encouraging him to play golf. Some members of the community felt that, without his mentor, Byron might drift away from the game, so they rallied around the talented youngster to give him all the encouragement he needed.

Strong outing at Fish River

A number of SAGDB players turned out for their provinces at the recent Fish River Challenge. The event, which is played over the Gary Player-designed Fish River Country Club, is contested between u/12 and u/14 teams from Western Province, Boland, Southern Cape, Eastern Cape, Border and the Free State/Northern Cape.

SAGDB players in Boland teams

Six of the most promising SAGDB youngsters in the Boland region were selected to play for their provincial team at a triangular inter-provincial event in Riversdale. The tournament, which also includes teams from Western Province and Southern Cape is contested at u/16 and u/19 level.

Riaan shines in Milnerton

SAGDB youngster Riaan Beukes put in a terrific showing at the recent Vernon Dickson Memorial Trophy held at Milnerton Golf Club. The 14 year old from Somerset West carded a round of two under par 69 to claim first place at the event.

Good returns at Kingswood

The SAGDB's elite squad in the Southern Cape put in another good showing when they competed at the recent Southern Cape Junior Golf Tournament at Kingswood Golf Club. Of the 68 players that turned out at the event, 13 were from the SAGDB's programme.

SAGDB players perform in Uitenhage

The top youngsters from the SAGDB's programme in Eastern Province were in action at the Extrusion World Junior Open at Uitenhage Golf Club in March. The players put in some excellent performances, confirming the strength of the programme in the region.

About the SAGDB

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng Central, Gauteng North, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
