Musiwalo comes close

For three rounds of the 2012 edition of the South African Amateur Strokeplay Championships at Glendower Golf Club, SAGDB graduate Musiwalo Nethunzwi was hot on the heels of the front-runners. After three below par rounds, he was in the final three-ball on the last day, teeing off just two shots behind the leader.

Former SAGDB player Cedric Rooi won the Citrusdal Open in January in a dominant display of brilliant golf. Cedric carded rounds of 69 and 60 to win by four shots from fellow SAGDB graduates Mark Mahoney and Jacquin Hess.

Matseleng shows promise

As part of its goal to drive the growth of golf across South Africa, the SAGDB is focused on bringing more girls into the sport. It is difficult to attract girls to a sport that has been traditionally viewed as male-dominated, and it has also been hard to keep them committed in a social environment where the pressures on girls are often much more severe than boys.

SAGDB players prosper in George

Ten players from the SAGDB's programme in the Southern Cape competed in the recent Southern Cape Junior Golf event at the George Golf Club. The event was the first official tournament for the year in the region and the youngsters responded well to the challenge.

About the SAGDB

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng Central, Gauteng North, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
