Four SAGDB learners thanked The Sports Trust, in partnership with Nedbank and Sun International, in the best way they know how: by letting their clubs do the talking at the recent 2013 Sports Trust Golf Challenge.

Bujela makes historic debut at SA Open

The 2012 South African Open Championships played at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate provided a historic moment for the game in this country. Soweto amateur Sipho Bujela became the first black amateur and the first SAGDB graduate to be exempt from qualifying for the national Open.

SAGDB golfers given chance to shine

Thanks to a special invitation from the South African Golf Association, eight players from the SAGDB were given an opportunity to gain valuable competitive experience during the final round of the South African Junior Interprovincial at Paarl Golf Club in December.

IPT showcases SAGDB talent

The South African Junior Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) is always the highlight of the junior golfing calendar. It is an opportunity for the top u/19 golfers in the country to represent their provinces in a highly competitive matchplay format that matches that of the senior IPT.

Winston wins Bobby Locke Open

SAGDB graduate Winston Adams became the third former SAGDB player to win a senior open in the Boland during 2012 when he claimed the Bobby Locke Open at Robertson Golf Club during November.

Calvin wins in KZN

Former SAGDB player Calvin Coelho won his second senior provincial open championship of 2012 when he took the title at the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Open at Umdoni Golf Club towards the end of last year. Calvin shot rounds of 72 and 71 to finish the tournament at one under par and tie for first place over the 36-hole event.

About the SAGDB

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng Central, Gauteng North, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
