Breaking new ground in Gauteng North

Soshanguve's Kifentse Nukeri might not see himself as a hero, but for many youngsters in the SAGDB's programme in Gauteng North, he is just that. Last year the 17-year old Sinqobile High School pupil became the first black player to represent his province at the u19 Inter-provincial Tournament (IPT) on merit, which is an achievement that other SAGDB players now know they can emulate.

Formal training has begun in the SAGDB's newest operational region of Limpopo. The Limpopo Golf Union has signed a memorandum of understanding with the SAGDB, paving the way for the development programme to expand into that province.

Zethu thrills at Border Championship

SAGDB graduate Zethu Myeki enjoyed a scintillating two days at the Border Ladies Championship during February. She carded rounds of 77, 72 and 75 to win the Strokeplay Championship by two shots.

About the SAGDB

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng Central, Gauteng North, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
