Franklin wins at Kingswood

The SAGDB's top player in the Southern Cape, 17-year old Franklin Manchest, added another title to his already impressive resume with victory at the recent Kingswood Open. Franklin shot two outstanding rounds of 67 and 71 to finish six-under par and claim the title by two strokes.

'Tiger' has the time of his life

He may have finished way off the pace in the end, but 11-year old Takalani 'Tiger' Musandiwa will never forget his first national tournament. The youngster from Soutpansberg Golf Club travelled to the Royal Durban Golf Club for the Nomads SA u13 Teams Championship last month and came back enlivened by the experience.

Cedric returns to form

One of the SAGDB's most successful graduates, Cedric Rooi, made a huge return to form at the recent Bredasdorp Open in Boland. The Riverside golfer shot rounds of 69 and 66 to finish 9-under par and win the event by six shots.

Juniors from the SAGDB in KwaZulu-Natal put in an outstanding showing at the recent Senior Association Junior Championships at Maritzburg Golf Club. Six players from the development programme ended in the prizes.

Worcester Secondary wins schools league

The SAGDB schools league in the Boland gives youngsters the opportunity to compete in an extended competition to test themselves against their peers. It is a great opportunity for them to get used to playing competitive golf.

Success in North West

The SAGDB's programme in the North West is not yet a year old, but already is it starting to bear fruit. Under the guidance of development manager Coenie Schoonhoven and with the support of the North West Golf Union, good news is already starting to come out of the region.

About the SAGDB

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, Central Gauteng, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng North, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
