SAGDB launches in Northern Cape

With the support of the Northern Cape Golf Union, the SAGDB has reached a significant milestone. The opening of operations in that province means that the SAGDB now has a presence in all 14 golfing provinces in the country.

Attie keeps on winning

The SAGDB's top player in the Free State, Attie van Wyk, continues to rack up success after success. Over the last six weeks he has won twice at official junior golf events and finished in the top ten at a third.

SAGDB players show their mettle at quadrangular

Last month junior teams at u19, u17, u15 and u13 level were involved in a quadrangular tournament between Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, Ekuhuleni and Mpumalanga. The event was an opportunity for the young players to test themselves against provincial level competition.

SAGDB to be represented in Free State womens team

Two players out of the SAGDB's programme in the Free State have been selected for this year's SA Womens Inter-Provincial Championship. Matseleng Mokoena and Zanele Mazibuko will represent their province at the tournament, with Zanele having been named as team captain.

A gem out of Newcastle

It may surprise most people to learn that the northern Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) town of Newcastle is one of South Africa's fifteen largest cities. It is also likely that few people are aware that the industrial centre has produced some legendary sporting stars like rugby's Bakkies Botha, and footballers Fani Madida, Helman Mkhalele and Sizwe Motaung.

Zethu on fire

SAGDB graduate from Border Zethu Myeki is having the year of her life on the golf course. She has been playing at such a consistently high standard that she has now moved to fourth on the Womens Golf South Africa national order or merit.

Balls for Atlantis

The SAGDB's Atlantis chapter in Western Province was opened on 1 April this year. It is not only the newest, but also without doubt the fastest growing chapter in the region.

Early success in Limpopo

The SAGDB's programme in Limpopo began formally in February this year. It has focussed around the Polokwane area where development manager Jean Sadie and fellow PGA coach Shaun Mouton have overseen the establishment of the first coaching chapters in the region.

Players from the SAGDB's programme in Border put in outstanding performances at the recent West Bank Junior Open. In total, ten players from the board were in the prizes.

About the SAGDB

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, Central Gauteng, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng North, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
