SAGDB presence felt in first National Squad

In December 2015 Golf RSA, the governing body for amateur golf in South Africa, announced its first National Squad. Five of the players named in the 34-man squad have ties to the SAGDB.

Banele shines at IPT

For Banele Mavuso, December 2015 may well be remembered as the month in which he realised just how good he can be. The SAGDB's top player in Mpumalanga was named as the joint most valuable player in the B section at the 2015 South African Under-19 Inter-Provincial (IPT), and immediately thereafter received a call up to the national squad.

Franklin wins on the big stage

KeNako Academy junior Franklin Manchest broke through for his maiden provincial title in the Nomads National Order of Merit in KwaZulu-Natal in early January. The 17-year-old George golfer fired rounds of 72, 71 and 70 at Umhlali Country Club to claim an emphatic four stroke victory on even-par 213.

SAGDB players shine at Leopard Trophy

Twenty three of South Africa's top juniors were invited to compete at the inaugural Leopard Trophy at Leopard Creek Country Club earlier this month. The event gave the players the chance to experience a tournament atmosphere at one of South Africa's most famous courses.

So close for Tristan at Fish River

Tristan Galant has fond memories of Fish River. The young SAGDB star won two national u13 titles at the course, and it continues to be a happy hunting ground for him.

Cedric wins again

One of the SAGDB's top graduates, Cedric Rooi from Riverside Golf Club, is enjoying a scintillating run of form. He was won three open amateur tournaments in the Boland in his last six starts.

A string of good results in Boland

SAGDB golfers in the Boland continue to produce strong performances at official junior events in the province. During January, players from the development programme were at or near the top of the leaderboard at four events in the region.

About the SAGDB

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, Central Gauteng, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng North, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
