The Sports Trust Challenge puts SAGDB front and centre

The annual Sports Trust Challenge is the most prestigious golf fundraiser in South Africa. Played at the Gary Player Country Club on the day after the Nedbank Golf Challenge, the event raises a significant amount of money for sports programmes in the country, including the SAGDB.

No stopping Gerhard

The SAGDB's top player in Limpopo, Gerhard Pepler, is enjoying an incredible run of form. After a string of victories in senior opens, he added the Limpopo Junior Open trophy to his cabinet as well.

Strong showing in George

Players from the SAGDB's programme in the Southern Cape had a very good couple of days in George recently. They featured in both the senior and junior opens at the club.

Zethu claims second place in Mpumalanga

SAGDB graduate Zethu Myeki added another podium finish to what has been a magnificent season at the recent Mpumalanga Open and Closed Championship at Middelburg Country Club. The Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation member finished in second place, just two shots behind the winner, Kajal Mistry.

Success in KZN

A number of players with links to the SAGDB put in strong performances at the recent Southern KwaZulu-Natal Open Championships at Margate Country Club. The event was the last major open tournament in the province for the year.

Makhetha flies SAGDB flag at Lion of Africa Cape Town Open

Makhetha Mazibuko may not be a household name, but he is proof of what the SAGDB programme can achieve. He is an example of a young golfer that came to the game through the SAGDB, progressed through the ranks as a junior golfer and is now playing on the professional circuit.

About the SAGDB

 

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, Central Gauteng, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng North, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

 

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

 

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
