After the recent Sanlam SA Women's Amateur Match Play Championship at Ebotse there can be no doubt about the influence that the SAGDB is having on the women's game. With the support of Womens Golf South Africa and local unions, huge strides are being made in developing some top players from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Tebogo does it again

Eleven year old Tebogo Lefifi might have been one of the younger competitors at the recent Nomads SA Girls Championship, but she already knows what it takes to reach the podium. Last year the youngster from Wanderers Golf Club won the D division at the event for players with handicaps from 26 and 30.

SAGDB dominates in Central Gauteng

Players from the SAGDB scored a clean sweep in two Central Gauteng Golf Union (CGGU) junior open tournaments towards the end of June. They won the A, B and C divisions at both the Modderfontein and Observatory events.

Alric tops the individual standings at invitational

Thirteen year old Alric Rooi led the Boland team to fourth place at the recent u14 Invitational played at Worcester. Alric himself topped the individual standings at the event after carding an excellent round of 77.

Success in Boland

SAGDB players from the Boland put in an excellent showings at the recent Langebaan and Stellenbosch Junior Closed tournaments. They were amongst the prizes across all the age groups.

Good returns at Kloof

The SAGDB's top girl player in KwaZulu-Natal, Celiwe Biyela, turned the tables on the boys at the recent Nomads Natal Schools Trophy at Kloof Country Club. Off her 8 handicap, Celiwe shot a round of 77 to win the prize for the best nett score of the day of 69.

SAGDB duo share the spoils in Paarl

Two of the SAGDB's top players in the Boland, Riaan Rooi and Willie Olivier, ended in a rare tie at the recent Paarl Junior Open. Both youngsters carded rounds of 71 to end level for first place.

About the SAGDB

 

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, Central Gauteng, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng North, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

 

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

 

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
