Close call for Carl

Central Gauteng SAGDB junior Carl Mwale produced an outstanding performance to finish tied second at the recent Gowrie SA U-15 Challenge in MooiRiver. He put together rounds of 70, 71 and 73 to end just one shot behind the winner.

Crystal continues to shine

Stellenbosch junior Crystal Beukes put in another set of strong performances at major tournaments recently. The 16-year old SAGDB player finished in the top ten at both the Western Province and KwaZulu-Natal Amateur Championships.

SAGDB players part of SA's success at Africa Region 5

Three players with ties to the SAGDB were part of the four-man GolfRSA Team that won the B division at this month's Africa Region 5 Golf Tournament in Zambia. Current learner Franklin Manchest together with graduates Steven le Roux and Siyanda Mwandla combined with Aneurin Gounden to defend South Africa's title at the event.

Zethu shines in SA win at RAACT

The SAGDB's top female graduate, Zethu Myeki, was part of the South African team that claimed victory at the Regional All-Africa Challenge Trophy (RAACT) in Lesotho this month. However, the tournament turned out to be more than just a chance to play for their country.

Musi goes close in Kyalami

SAGDB graduate Musiwalo Nethunzwi finished second at the recent Kyalami Challenge on the IGT Tour. The Soweto pro, who is a member of the Gary Player Class of 2017, carded rounds of 68 66 and 69 to finish two just two shots behind winner Merrick Bremner.

Daveyton golfing duo set off on a new adventure

When the second public school term commenced this month at H B Nyathi Secondary School in Daveyton, two of their learners weren't there. Instead, talented golfers Bandile Mokoena (15) and Senzo Funeka (13) had begun a new journey after receiving scholarships from the Ekurhuleni metro’s Sport, Heritage, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SHRAC) Department to attend the TuksSport High School, an independent co-ed school catering for learners from Grade 8 to 12.

SAGDB dominates at Wanderers

Wanderers Golf Club held its junior club championships in March, and all three divisions were won by SAGDB players. This was a great result for the programme and shows how well it is progressing in the Central Gauteng region.

Bridge boosts junior golf in South Africa

Junior golf in South Africa has received a timely lift with the announcement of a brand new national series of events that will culminate in two players qualifying to take part in the North and South Junior at Pinehurst, North Carolina in the United States of America next year.

SA Kids title for Sisi

Central Gauteng junior Sisi Mdaki is showing some promising potential. The 10-year old from Leeuwkop won her age group division at the recent SA Kids Golf tournament played at her home club.

About the SAGDB

 

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, Central Gauteng, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng North, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.

 

Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.

 

Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
