Good showing at Sun City

A strong field of local juniors teed up at the Sun City SA u15 & u13 Challenge at Sun City last month. Played over the Gary Player Country Club, which is the home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, the event gave some of South Africa's top up-and-coming juniors the opportunity to test themselves against this iconic course.

The SAGDB's development manager for the Free State region, Ratha Motaung, retired at the end of July. Motaung has been with the development board since 2002, and has made a significant impact on growing the game in his home province.

Top ten finish for Cole in Tshwane

Cole Stevens continued his strong run of form this year with a good showing at the recent Tshwane Junior Open. The 16-year old from Parkview Golf Club put together rounds of 76 and 73 to finish in a tie for seventh place.

Gerhard does it again

The SAGDB's top player in Limpopo, Gerhard Pepler, continues to rack up the successes. The 17 year old defended the Mogol Open title he won last year, carding rounds of 73 and 72 to take the trophy.

Siyanda wins in Umhlali

SAGDB graduate Siyanda Mwandla added another success to his 2017 season with victory at the North Coast Open Championships played at Umhlali Country Club. Mwandla, who is currently a development coach with the SAGDB, carded rounds of 66 and 71 to finish five under par.

About the SAGDB


The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) is a non-profit organisation with section 18A donations tax exemption status. Since its formation in 1999, the SAGDB has grown a network of coaches and officials who work across the country to develop the game in the cities and also the most remote areas. It currently operates in Boland, Border, Central Gauteng, the Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng North, Kwazulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, North West, the Southern Cape, and Western Province.


Through its PGA-approved LTAD coaching programme, the board currently has the capacity to coach 2,500 children per week in 10 regions.


Since its inception, the SAGDB has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced 1 senior national player and 4 players in the senior national squad, 25 senior provincial and u23 players, 108 junior provincial players, and four players in the senior national squad. Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance Centres such as the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation. Six former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the Sunshine Tour.
